Multiple Metrics on one Tile

Discover the process of designing a Tile that showcases various Metrics

Your Board or Management may request the consistent provision of a Dashboard containing specific Metrics.
In order to maintain a clear and easily comprehensible presentation, it may be advisable to consolidate specific Metrics within a single Tile. For instance, you could consider combining metrics such as Revenue, Gross Margin, and EBITDA. This article explains the process of creating a Tile with the above Metrics step by step.

Add a Section with the right Metrics to the Custom Table

To add a new Section to the Custom Table navigate to Settings ⚙️> Custom Tables. You can create a new Custom Table and add a Section to it or use an already existing Custom Table.

Additional Resource:

  • Learn how to configure Custom Tables to hold financial and non-financial data specific to your business: Create Custom Tables

In this example, we will use the existing Custom Table called "KPIs".

To add a new Section with Metrics that should be presented under Tile:

  1. Click on "+ Add Line"
  2. Switch New Line to Section, and call it Dashboard Metrics
  3. Click on the "+ Add Line" button below the created Section and add three new Lines:
    1. Revenue
    2. Gross Margin
    3. EBITDA
  4. Keep Format as Money ($)
  5. Apply the right Colors
  6. Uncheck "Allow Import"

Add Global Drivers to calculate each Metric

Once a Custom Table is adjusted to include a Dashboard Metrics Section, navigate to 📈Plan > KPIs Custom Table and add Global Drivers.

Helpful Hint about Global Drivers:

  • Global Drivers remain consistent across all Plans, even during Actuals Periods
  • They exclusively reside in Custom Tables and are denoted with a [GL] when viewing the driver in a Custom Table
  • Global Drivers are ideal for calculating key performance indicators (KPIs) like EBITDA (Earnings before Interest, Tax, Depreciation, and Amortization) where the formula remains constant and doesn't change from plan to plan

To add a Global Driver [GL] click on . . . next to Revenue, Gross Margin and EBITDA > Add Global Drive Custom:

Revenue Global Driver [GL]:
Input 1: Revenue for all Departments & Accounts
fx: x
Input 2: Constant 1
Start Date Type: Min Date
End Date Type: Max Date

Gross Margin Global Driver [GL]
:
Input 1: Gross Margin $ from Margins
fx: x
Input 2: Constant 1
Start Date Type: Min Date
End Date Type: Max Date

EBITDA Global Drivers [GL]:
EBITDA should be calculated as Net Income + Interest Expense + Income Taxes + Depreciation & Amortization. Global Drivers [GL] as based on two Inputs, so we need to add 2 Global Drivers [GL]:

  • Global Driver [GL] 1:
Input 1: Net Income $ from Margins
    fx: +
    Input 2: Interest Expense
    Start Date Type: Min Date
    End Date Type: Max Date
  • Global Driver [GL] 2:
    Input 1: Income Taxes
    fx: +
    Input 2: Depreciation & Amortization
    Start Date Type: Min Date
    End Date Type: Max Date

Add a Tile to the Dashboard

Each Metric that needs to be housed under the Tile is now calculated via Global Drivers [GL]. To add a new Tile navigate to Dashboard >  Actions > Tile:

Tile Name: Metrics
Series: Custom Table as Category, Table Table: KPIs. Line: Dashboard Metrics

Source: Plan 3/24 (or any other Plan or Actuals)
Compared To: None
Periodicity: Monthly
Range: This Year (or any other Range)
Tile Type: Line Chart Tile
Display: Children

Helpful Hint:

  • Display Subtotal shows only the top-level value of Sections (the sum)
  • Display Children show the first level of lines below the Section (so the Children up the the 1st level)

As a last step, customize (move and/or resize) the Tile:

  • To move a Tile, simply drag and drop it to the new location. Other tiles will automatically re-arrange to fill in any gaps created by the move
  • To resize a Tile, click the bottom right corner of the tile and drag it outwards or inwards to resize. Other tiles will automatically re-arrange to fill in any gaps created by the resize
